Can the miracle of aquponics – hydroponic gardening combined with fish farming – be brought back to your own back yard?  Can you grow ten times as much fresh produce as you used to…in the same amount of garden space?  Can you have an ultra-productive, ultra-organic, perfectly symbiotic growing environment?  With no weeding, pests, or soil to fuss with?  And without spending years to learn how, or breaking the bank to get it set up?An aquaponics system can either be complex (like this one) or scaled down for home growers. Those are the bold claims Aquaponics 4 You makes.  They say yes you can revolutionize home gardening with this cutting-edge way of growing…once you know how.

And they’re going to be the ones to teach you…So does Aquaponics 4 You live up to these lofty promises?  Read on and find out. What Is It All About? Aquaponics 4 You is the best selling guide for arguably the most interesting new thing to come along in home gardening since the invention of the seed – namely, aquaponics. The idea behind aquaponics is a simple one.  Hydroponic gardens are more productive per square foot than traditional, in-ground gardens.  This is not disputed.  Because hydroponics eliminate the need for soil by growing plants with their root systems directly in the water, and use that water as a medium for DIRECTLY infusing the plants with the nutrients necessary for growth, you can simply grow a lot more plants in a lot less space. It’s like the difference between setting up an all-you-can-eat buffet versus hooking up to an IV.  Since plants don’t need to draw this and that from various bits of the soil around them, they can exist in a relatively smaller space and still get all they need. BUT…and isn’t there always a but?

giving a plant everything it needs isn’t necessarily the same as giving it everything possible to make it as rich and delicious and nutritious as possible.  And people have discovered, over the year, that although you can grow a lot of plants in a hydroponic setting, that removing them from their natural, organic element takes a toll on taste, and possibly on nutritional value as well.Aquaponics is an attempt to get the best of both worlds.  By adding live fish to the water medium the plants are growing in, you re-introduce a natural, organic element back into the growing process. It works like this:

Fish live, swim, and eat in the water.  Inevitably, they create waste.  Which is to say, they poop.  The fish waste decays and releases ammonia.  The ammonia interacts with bacteria in the water, and nitrates are formed.  Along with this, trace minerals leech into the water, and algae inevitably starts to grow.  All this stuff makes the water toxic to the fish, over time.  But…  Plants need things like nitrates, minerals, and algae in order to thrive.  The plants take these things from the water, leaving only fresh, clean, fish-friendly water behind. It’s a plan so elegant only nature could have devised it.But aquaponics has harnessed it.And the upshot is, you get real, nutrient-rich and delicious organic produce, but you can grow ten times as much of it in the same little amount of space you could growing in the soil.  And the fish become your sole means of “tending the plants,” with virtually no maintenance required, outside of regular feeding. The Good News About Aquaponics 4 YouThe good news is, this isn’t just theory any more.  People are doing this successfully.  And they’re doing it on small enough a scale that it is EXTREMELY practical for home use.You can even set up an indoor mini-aquaponic system to grow a little herb or salad garden right in your house. The theory works.  But it takes some know-how.And that’s where Aquaponics 4 You comes in.This little E-book, and the supporting how-to video, give you everything you need to know to get set up and started.  How-to instructions that are more than complete enough that you can not only build your own aquaponics system, but will understand how to scale it either up or down, depending on how much room and ambition you have.  Supporting video that walks you through the steps, showing you how to do each thing along the way.  List of materials you’ll need to get started – including the tanks, pumps, growing media, and fish you’ll be choosing and employing in your own aquaponic garden. You’ll find the whole thing easy to assemble (and DISassemble, if you need to move it), easy to maintain, and surprisingly fun to work with.  There’s something charming about going out to your fish pond (or tank) every day, interacting with the fish, and knowing that they’re playing an active role in helping your grow your organic garden.  Something feels very natural and very right about the whole process. You don’t need to understand the first thing about hydroponic gardening before you get started, because Aquaponics 4 You does not assume any prior knowledge on the reader’s part. That means you can test the waters safely, no matter how big a newbie you are to aquaponics…or to gardening, for that matter. The Bad (?) News About Aquaponics 4 YouMy major beef with Aquaponics 4 You is that it’s a little short.Don’t get me wrong.  It has everything you need.

But it doesn’t have a lot more.  No inspirational photos or stories, so don’t get this assuming you’ll use it to pump yourself up for the project ahead.  This is strictly no-fluff.There’s also no real information on how to choose and grow particular kinds of fish if you want to make fish farming (for consumption or for sale) part of the process.  In fact, selling your fish and your produce (since your garden will be so hyper-productive) is one of the big selling points of the ad campaign.  But it’s not really explained, other than to mention that you can do it.  So that’s a bit of a disappointment. It’s also typical of this sort of product that they undersell the initial labor involved in setting everything up.  They tell you how simple it is – and it IS simple.  But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy.  Just easy-to-understand.  To get this running, a typical setup is going to have some pretty large tanks and a huge volume of water.  So expect to put some sweat equity in on the front end.OverallBut all in all, the system IS more than just a good idea.  It works.  It’s based on good, honest, natural biological science, and once you get set up, it almost can’t help but create a super-productive and surprisingly tranquil garden environment for you.  (You’ll love the gentle whoosh of the water pump and the excited splash of the fish when feeding time comes!)Highly recommended.
